ACADEMICS.web.id – Recently, JTBC, a television station, aired a report that unveiled a startling revelation about the production of handbags from the renowned brand Christian Dior.
The report disclosed that an Italian court had confirmed the exploitation of Chinese workers involved in the manufacture of luxurious Dior handbags at low costs in factories located in China. These bags were subsequently labeled ‘Made in Italy’. The court documents revealed the working conditions at the subcontractors in China who produce these Dior handbags.
The factory operates 24 hours a day without any breaks, with safety devices removed from the machinery to speed up production.
This practice results in extremely low production costs. The Chinese subcontractors sell each handbag to Dior in Italy for 80,000 won, or approximately Rp950,000.
Meanwhile, Dior stores in Italy sell each of these handbags at a significantly higher price, amounting to 3.8 million won or up to Rp45 million.
In this case, the court highlighted the failure of Dior’s business unit in terms of labor practices, emphasizing that they are responsible for not verifying the actual working conditions.
Many people are increasingly convinced that most luxury brands merely sell their name and prestige.
